what is SGPA ?
SGPA stands for Semester Grade Point Average . It is a measure of a student’s performance in a specific semester . It takes into account the grades you get in all the courses you take during that semester and the number of credits each course carries .
How is SGPA Calculated ?
Determine Grade Points : Each grade you receive corresponds to a grade point. For example , if you score 60% in a course, you might get a grade ‘B’ which equals 6.0 grade points .
Credit Points : Multiply the grade points by the number of credits for each course . If a course is 4 credits and you scored a ‘B’ (6.0 grade points), then the credit points for that course are 4 x 6.0 = 24 .
Sum of Credit Points : Add up all the credit points for all your courses in that semester.
Sum of Credits: Add up the total number of credits for all your courses in that semester.
Calculate SGPA: Divide the sum of credit points by the sum of credits.
SGPA = Total Credit Points / Total credits
Example Calculation:
Suppose you have the following courses and grades in a semester :
Course | Credits | % Marks | Grade | Grade Points | Credit Points |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Paper I | 4 | 60% | B | 6.0 | 24 |
Paper II | 4 | 50% | D | 5.0 | 20 |
Paper III | 4 | 70% | A | 7.0 | 28 |
Paper IV | 4 | 75% | A | 7.5 | 30 |
Practical I | 4 | 75% | A | 7.5 | 30 |
Practical II | 4 | 80% | A | 8.0 | 32 |
Total Credit Points = 24 + 20 + 28 + 30 + 30 + 32 = 164
Total Credits = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 24
SGPA= 164/24 = 6.83
What is CGPA ?
CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a measure of a student’s overall performance across all semesters. It considers the SGPA of all semesters and the total credits of all those semesters.
How is CGPA Calculated ?
SGPA for Each Semester: Calculate the SGPA for each semester.
Total Credit Points for All Semesters: Add up all the total credit points from each semester.
Total Credits for All Semesters: Add up the total number of credits from each semester.
Calculate CGPA : Divide the total credit points by the total credits.
CGPA
CGPA= ∑(SGPA×Credits points) / ∑(Credits)
Example Calculation:
Suppose you have the following SGPAs and credits for six semesters:
Semester | SGPA | Credits |
---|---|---|
I | 6.83 | 24 |
II | 7.08 | 24 |
III | 6.75 | 24 |
IV | 7.25 | 24 |
V | 7.00 | 24 |
VI | 6.90 | 24 |
Total Credit Points = (6.83 * 24) + (7.08 * 24) + (6.75 * 24) + (7.25 * 24) + (7.00 * 24) + (6.90 * 24)
Total Credit Points = 163.92 + 169.92 + 162.00 + 174.00 + 168.00 + 165.60 = 1003.44
Total Credits = 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 + 24 = 144
CGPA= 1003.44/144 = 6.97
Summary:
- SGPA tells you how well you did in a single semester.
- CGPA gives an overall picture of your performance across all semesters.
- Both are calculated by converting your percentage marks to grade points, multiplying by the course credits, and then averaging them appropriately.
This way, SGPA and CGPA provide a standardized way to measure and compare academic performance consistently across different courses and semesters.
